Buio Buio, Carignano del Sulcis, DOC, Riserva
A delightful Carignano from Sulcis, Sardinia.
The Sulcis region, located in the far southwest of Sardinia, is almost entirely surrounded by the sea and is consistently exposed to salty winds that shape both its climate and the products that originate there. Within just a few square kilometers, there's a remarkable diversity of soil types. Sandy soils overlay cemented limestone, alternating with gravel-rich clay areas. This variety, coupled with the maritime influence, imparts a strong personality to the wines.
The vines are cultivated using both trellis and bush systems, yielding 50-60 quintals per hectare. Selected parcels from the oldest vineyards, averaging between 25 and 35 years old, are utilized. The grapes are destemmed, and during fermentation, maceration extends for 18-20 days. The wine matures for 12 months in Tonneaux barrels of different passages (1st to 3rd), followed by an additional 6 months in concrete tanks. The maturation is completed with a minimum of 6 months in the bottle.
The deep red wine exhibits shimmering and luminous reflections. The aromatic complexity follows a graceful trajectory, beginning with floral and red fruit notes, which then unfold into balsamic tones reminiscent of the Mediterranean maquis and oriental spices.
On the palate, it is rich, full, and satisfying. The silky and layered texture is invigorated by a sprightly freshness, an underlying saline undertone, and robust yet refined tannins. All of these elements culminate in a lengthy and captivating finish of wild berries and herbal hints.
This wine pairs excellently with poultry dishes, oven-roasted lamb or goat meat, as well as aged cheeses.
