Nieddera

This red grape variety primarily originates from the Valle Tirso region in Oristano, extending towards the east. It's also known by names like Nieddaera, Nireddie, and Pistamatta. The exact origins of this grape variety remain a mystery, but it's suspected that, like many other Sardinian grape varieties, it found its way to the island during the Spanish occupation from 1323 to 1720.

This grape variety contributes to the production of red wines with subtle notes of licorice and juicy cherries. Unfortunately, it was once endangered, but thanks to efforts, particularly by Contini from Cabrass, it has been successfully revived.

According to Kym Anderson's statistics, in 2016, there was an estimated cultivation area of 91 hectares for this grape variety, making it an integral part of Sardinian viticulture.
