Cantina Santa Maria La Palma – Sardinian Wines from Alghero | Vermentino, Akènta & Sustainability
Cantina Santa Maria La Palma is one of Sardinia’s most important and historic wineries, founded in 1959 by a community of farmers in the reclaimed lands of the Nurra region near Alghero. What began as a cooperative of 100 growers has grown into a dynamic network of 300 members cultivating over 800 hectares, making it one of the island’s largest vineyard estates.
The winery’s strength lies in the union of many small family vineyards combined with the expertise of skilled agronomists and oenologists. This diverse terroir allows optimal cultivation of native Sardinian varieties such as Vermentino di Sardegna, Cannonau, Cagnulari, and international grapes including Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
Santa Maria La Palma is known for producing iconic wines such as Aragosta Vermentino, Italy’s best-selling white wine, and Akènta, the celebrated Sardinian sparkling wine. The winery is also renowned for innovative projects like Akènta Sub, an exclusive underwater-aged sparkling wine, and Akènta Day, a unique public event showcasing the emergence of the underwater wine cellar.
Sustainability is a core value: thanks to a large photovoltaic system, 65% of the winery’s energy comes from renewable sources, with the goal of achieving full energy independence. Santa Maria La Palma produces over 5.5 million bottles per year, exporting its wines across Italy and to more than 50 countries worldwide.
Rooted in tradition yet driven by innovation, Cantina Santa Maria La Palma continues to promote the excellence of Alghero, Sardinia, and its wines around the world.
