Cannonau from Sardinia
Cannonau is by far the most important grape variety in Sardinia, covering over 8,000 hectares of vineyards. Known globally as Grenache (France) or Garnacha (Spain), it produces warm, fruit-driven wines with Mediterranean charm and complexity.
Origins & History
The origins of Cannonau are debated: While many believe it came from Spain, historical records and genetic evidence also point to Sardinia. What’s certain is that Cannonau has played a central role in Sardinia’s wine tradition for centuries.
Best Regions in Sardinia
The finest expressions of Cannonau come from the mountainous areas of Mamoiada and Oliena, where vines up to 150 years old thrive in sandy soils. The hot days and cool nights promote full ripeness and balanced acidity – key elements for top-quality wines.
Varietal & Winemaking
Unlike many Grenache wines worldwide, Cannonau is rarely blended in Sardinia. It’s usually vinified solo, often aged in large oak barrels or concrete tanks rather than small barriques, due to its naturally low tannin levels. The result? Wines with ripe red fruit, herbal notes, and soft textures.
Elsewhere in Italy, this grape appears under different names – Tocai Rosso in Veneto, Alicante in Tuscany and Sicily – but Sardinia remains its spiritual and stylistic home.
